BIOGRAPHY

"I am, and my music is, a work in progress. If you hear me play on any given night I will sound a certain way, but a month later I will sound different. That's the beauty of my music at this young stage of my career. There is so much room to grow."

David Cruz is an up and coming Toronto jazz guitarist whose

thoughtful playing and musical sensibilities go well beyond his years.David has been performing locally and internationally since 2014 in world class venue’s such as; The Rex, The Home Smith Bar at The Old Mill Toronto, The Jazz Bistro,The Living Arts Centre, and many others.

 

David is both a respected band leader and sideman.

In 2014 David began his undergraduate degree at York University.

Here he began to study privately with Canadian jazz legend, Lorne

Lofsky. He played in numerous small ensembles led by highly regarded Canadian jazz musicians; Kelly Jefferson, Roy Patterson and Anthony Michelli. David was the guitarist for the York University Jazz Orchestra, led by Mike Cado. In the final year of his degree, David was selected to participate in Jazz FM’s Jazzology program. He was a featured guest on Jazz FM, where he brought in a recording of his own and shared other music that inspired him. David graduated BFA Hons in 2018.

 

In May of 2019 David released a self titled EP that has since

earned him worldwide recognition in the jazz community. The recording features a mix of standards and originals that have hit the airwaves across five continents. Of David’s playing, Laila Biali (Host of CBC’s Saturday Night Jazz) says; “At (age) twenty-three David Cruz is a wonderfully dynamic player.” David can be found promoting his new release in jazz clubs all over Toronto. Outside of being a leader David is busy as a sideman. Most notably in The Avery Cantello Blues Band - a project which has toured Ontario and headlined some of its major jazz

festivals.
